Wild Blue Yonder!

I just got back from the Brattle Theater, where I saw a movie called Wild Blue Yonder, directed by Werner Herzog.
Wow- it was kind of a trip. It reminded me a bit of Koyanisquatsi in terms of being largely composed of stunning visuals, but for the most part these were done without trick photography. A lot of it was footage from the Space Shuttle, and of divers swimming around under ice packs in Antarctica.
The story, such as it was, was narrated by Brad Dourif, who plays a depressed alien from the Andromeda galaxy. He and his crew arrived on earth with great plans, but none of them worked out. "Our great great great great great great grandfathers were brilliant scientists, but by the time we got here, hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of years ago,' Dourif moans, 'we just SUCKED."
So the tale then follows a bunch of astronauts from earth, played by footage of the space shuttle astronauts, as they are sent on a mission to find other habitable planets. They end up on the very planet that the depressed aliens left, where they explore, and we watch the under-ice diving, interspersed with interview footage of mathematicians explaining something called 'chaotic transport.'
It was interesting and thought provoking, although it was pretty short and I don't think I could have dealt with it if it was any longer. Check this out, but only after a couple of shots of espresso and maybe a few bong hits or some mushrooms.
