Should Obama keep smoking for the good of his career?

This interesting article raises the idea that Senator Obama’s stentorian speaking voice comes from the fact that he smokes. Should he quit? If he quit, and his voice lost its impressive tone, how much would that hurt his political career? For the good of the country, should he keep smoking?

Joe Harris, a local bass player, just dropped dead at 60 (give or take --I have not seen an obit, yet). In years past, Joe played with Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, The Supremes, Natalie Cole, and Ray Charles.

Joe was an instructor at Blues and Swing week, which is where I met him. He was a quiet, but nfectiously joyous person and a superb guitar player when he wasn't teaching bass. Last summer I got to play along while he and John Cephas traded songs. (They played jazz, swing and pop tunes in addition to some obscure blues tunes. That late night session is one of my treasured memories.)

Joe was a smoker. Obama should quit, if he can.
