How is McCain’s campaign ‘suspended’ if he is still giving interviews, Palin is having photo-ops, his surrogates and campaign staffers are still on TV, and he is running campaign commercials?

He has officially suspended his honor.

IIRC, there are a number of live events he has now canceled and the current spots you're seeing are prior obligations being fulfilled. I know that the Diane Rehm show today confirmed there are a number of fund raising events now canceled.

Things like TV commercials are time bought way in advance with no refund or minimally a refund penalty, so even a suspended campaign would still be running already-purchased ads.

His campaign isn't in a state of total standstill, though. Palin can go say what she wants without having to be at the Senate. His "suspension" really means that all things that require his attention are stopped.

But the campaign people are still going on TV and radio shows and... well, campaigning!

Some of them will be, I'm sure, yes. I mean, after all, the press wants to know what the hell is going on, and you send your staffers out to explain that. But a significant amount of actual campaigning has stopped.

Just because you suspend the driver of a car doesn't mean the car stops moving.

It's pathetic.

It means that he has stopped campaigning (temporarily)--running around state to state, shaking hands and kissing babies, etc.--and is instead in Washington taking care, primarily, of his duties as a senator. It's not that all activies related to getting him elected have been paused, just that he, personally, is taking care of other things. It seems like a rather praiseworthy attitude to me.

Well- the Palin pick absolutely sealed the deal for me for Obama. There is no way I could vote for McCain after that. So I am biased at this point, but it seemed like a stunt to me.
