Christopher Hitchens often strikes me as something of a blowhard, but this article of his on North Korea is very well thought-out and provocative. I can't help but agree with him that it is good that the US is calling Kim out a bit, but at the same time, if we just insult him and then don't follow through, it is just schoolyard stuff and cheap tricks.
The thing that impressed me most about the article is this satellite photo of the Korean peninsula at night, showing the relative electrification of the two countries.

I may be naive in assuming it is real. But is sort of fits the pattern of batshit craziness of the North Korean regime.

Indeed, the map is suspicious. Shenyang China clearly is in the picture and appears as a mild smudge. According to Wikipedia, it has a population of 7.2 million and from the pix, looks to have lots of modern looking high rises.

I found a composite map of world which shows the Japanese as an arc of light with the North Korean peninsula not showing a clear demarcation and with a bright spot where I imagine Shenyang to be. Even when you click to zoom in, however, it is hard to figure geography. Still, makes one wonder about the first map.

Although as I look at that map, I think there is a pretty clear demarcation between the north and south.
