Movie Night

I did a little bit of work, but most of tonight was taken up (so far) with watching action movies. I watched Fantastic Four, which I didn't think deserved the scorn that it got. Some of the stuff had to be updated unless they wanted to set it back in the cold war, so I can forgive them for that, and they got some of the elements of the early series right on, in particular the fact that it really sucked to be Ben Grimm, and that Johnny was kind of a dick, especially in that he was always talking smack about Ben and playing practical jokes on him. The cameo of Stan Lee as Willie Lumpkin, the Baxter Building's mailman, was perfect.
The second movie was Starship Troopers, a movie I haven't watched in a long time, but for which I have always had a sneaking affection. The odd thing is how much more apt the movie is now than when it came out; the parallels between our culture and the fascist military-industrial complex of that world are more striking than ever. In fact, I don't think anyone would make that movie now, at least not that way- it would seem too over the top and heavy handed as a critique of the current state of our society. Food for thought, I guess.
Now to try and get a little more actual work done tonight. Or maybe not.

I sorta did!
But now I am looking forward to SNL! It had better be good. I don't know who the host is.

I remembered that it was the strokes and some guy I never heard of. I still don't know who that is.

Have you ever read Starship Troopers ? Quite the commentary on the military, governments, war, and civil responsibility...

I thought the movie was rather light as a critique of war in comparison with the book.

Yeah, but I was just impressed by how much MORE of a commentary it has become since... well you know.

I thought Starship Troopers was a brilliant movie. When it came out a friend of mine referred to it as "90210 meets Hitler Youth."

I've been watching Nero Wolfe episodes recently. That show is freaking brilliant.

How're you doing? Any major developments to report?

First off, I like that icon for several reasons!

Is that the recent Nero Wolfe with Maury Chaykin (I think) and Tim Matheson? I thought those were interesting, although I don't think that Wolfe is quite morbidly obese enough. He looks like he could actually walk somewhere if he wanted to.
Nothing new on other fronts. Same stuff. Have a thesis chapter due soon, and I am trying to polish it up.

How's by you?

I like that icon a lot too. And now that I've poneyed up for extra icon space, I hope to snag many more of that ilk.

So yes, that's the Nero Wolfe I was talking about. Maybe he's not sufficiently obses, but the actor does an incredible job of playing the character. The exchanges he has with Fritz (the butler/cook) are incredible.

Things're ok with me I spose. Trying to finish up some fellowship applications. Trying to read. Trying to keep my house clean. Seems like everything takes tons of effort :)

You should take some icons from the work of Art Frahm, a commentary on which can be found here.

Truly demented.

I like how that Nero Wolfe has sort of an ensemble cast, so that the non-principal players are the same from episode to episode, but playing different people.
