Yesterday was Stefanie’s birthday, but there was also a big rally in support of Israel down in Brookline, so she and I and Meret decided to go down and check it out and have birthday dinner down there. It was pretty well attended, considering how hot it was. Here’s a picture. Sorry for camera-phone quality; I decided to forget my camera.

As is often the case, I have been pushed into a somewhat more right of center position than I generally take on things by the extreme vitriol poured out on Israel and on Jews by those opposed to what Israel is doing right now. I absolutely agree that it is not at all racist to disagree, even strongly, with what Israel does, but for somereason it often seems to turn out that way. Oh well.
Anyway, a fun birthday was had by all.

Ditto. It's strange being in a position to agree with Bush and other people I generally despise... but.. yikes.

It's really remarkable. I was looking at an article on the Huffington Post about Joe Lieberman, and I was really shocked at how quickly opposition to him centered on his being a Jew, and how quickly the old paradigms cropped up, and probably among people who wouldn't consider themselves racists.

2500 years or prejudice takes a long time to go away overtly... the internalized suspicions and prejudices.... so much longer.

I've been astounded at the bias of the news coverage. I've read multiple articles talking about the war that focus only on the attacks on Lebanon and if there is any mention of any losses, injuries, bombings or casualties in Israel it's almost a side note.

Someone pointed out that many news organizations refer Lebanese as 'civilians,' and Israelis as 'Israelis.'

At some point I'm going to stop being surprised (shocked, outraged, hurt, angered) by just how fucked up the world is.

Today is not the day.

I never see why it has to be considered a "right of center" view in the first place.
Did you ever read Michael Lerners' "A Socialism of Fools: Anti-Semitism on the Left"? It's good for the history of the behaviors of others you describe.

I too find myself pushed to more to the "right" due to current events. Course, here, my right is your left, that is, "Kick the shit out of Israel, go Hizballah!"

I don't like Hizballah! I don't want to support them and I don't particularly want to see them victorious. I actually probably would have put some rants in my journal about the issue, but then, interestingly enough, I remember you on my friends list, and wonder how you'd feel about such vitriol. Then I re-think said vitriol. There was a thing on NPR last week where a Lebanese man said other Lebanese in his area were hesitant about giving interviews, because they were feeling emotional and would say things that made them sound like extremists. I guess that sort of applies to me. I have these emotional reactions, and need to be able to get beyond them.
I don't want to see Israeli civilians due anymore than I want to see Lebanese or Palestinian civilians die (although I have absolutely no problem with active-duty Israeli soliders captured or killed -within- occupied territory, if that were only the case).

So I'm trying not to say anything about current issues, because the thoughts and feeling I've been having lately are a bit more jingoistic, and don't reflect actual conscious thought.

Well, it's good that we have each other to keep us honest. I am trying, even when pushed to the right, to keep it on a rational level.
