The last one worked pretty well, so...

Can someone explain to me why Roman Polanski should not be arrested and sentenced for his previous crimes, as well as for his unlawful flight?

Someone (maybe Bill Maher, which would be a shame) said that next year, the oscar for best director should include a prize of having sex with the daughter of one of Polanski's supporters.

Because he should instead be castrated and set on fire.

I could go along with that.

There's pretty much no explanation of this that I would accept as valid.

Yeah, especially after reading the court transcripts on thesmokinggun.com.

Especially since he was ALREADY CONVICTED and skipped town without serving his sentence.

But now I have the "and also his countryman Roman Polanski" line from "Manchester, England, England" from Hair stuck in my head.

And not only was he convicted, but he pled guilty- in other words he admitted it, and didn't challenge the charges. Resisting the punishment seems to indicate no teshuvah there. Harvey Weinstein also needs some schooling on this, because it is a while until next Yom Kippur.

heard on NPR: Roman Polanski is the 5 foot Pole you wouldn't touch anything with.

Some talking heads have been pretty convincing that there was substantial judicial misconduct and that therefore the original verdict should be tossed and none of Polanski's prior testimony should be admissible. Given the nature of the publicity -- e.g. read the comments -- I don't think he could get a fair retrial by jury. However, he can ask for a non-jury trial.

Unfortunately, this is a very common crime and most perps don't get charged, much less punished. Polanski being famous doesn't make this crime worse than the drunk uncle or the softball coach, etc. They all deserve to be tried.

As much as I enjoy his talents as a filmmaker, I can't go there. An adult having sex with a 13-year-old isn't sex, it's rape.

hmmmm

Well, I am certainly not a supporter of Polanski, but I think some of the facts of the case need to be cleared up. First he wasn't convicted. He plead to one of the charges and he served time until formal sentecing. Part of the plea agreement was that the sentence would be set to "time served". Granted it was only a couple of months. But shortly before the formal sentencing the judge made it known that he would not keep the deal and was planning a longer sentence. Polanski filed judical misconduct charges and then fled the country while on bail before the hearing. While I am not a supporter I think that is a raw deal.

Re: hmmmm

ahem.

there is no evidence of judicial misconduct. that's merely his defense.

Re: hmmmm

As others have mentioned, that was his defense.

Either way, we have a place for people to challenge the procedures of their prosecution. That's what the appellate court system is designed to do.

this baffles me too.
i don't know why people i like are such wrong thinkers!

sorry i missed this thread.
especially the part about the victim wanting to FORGIVE and MOVE PAST THIS. troubling, since she reached a settlement with him ages ago.

the world would not be better off if rich people just paid off their victims to avoid prosecution. fuck that noise.
