Current Music: Beatles - Keep Your Hands Off My Baby
Yesterday, Stefanie and I put a downpayment on our newest family member. This is an African Grey parrot, a baby born on 6/13 of this year. He won't be ready to come home with us until early October. Yes, I know I am allergic to lots of things, but I don't seem bothered by birds, and in any case I am tired of letting my lungs push me around. Stefanie and Meret both love birds, and Stefanie has had several over the years, so knows what she is doing. We just fell in love with this little guy. He is so cute and friendly! Energetic, but not hyper, and curious without being fidgety. Yay!
There is something of a controversy over the name. I thought we had settled on B.B. King-Ramone, the Maximum R&bird, but for some reason Meret is balking at this. Please suggest names!

Well, since African Greys can be found as far as Western Kenya, how about the Swahili (Kiswahili) word for thank you - Asante?

My favorites so far (other than BB), are Zoot, Chef B.I.R.D., Flint, Fender, Pearl, Earl Grey, Yardbird, Cyrano de Birdgirac, Fizz, Birducken, Butterbean, and Pretty Boy Floyd. Other names I like are Slate, Ziggy Stardust, Pee Wee, Allergen, Smoke, Tookie (this is parrot in Hebrew), Ash, Zamfir master of the panflute, Barack, Dino, and Peep.

Ooh, you could call him Fizzgig after the little fuzzy pet in The Dark Crystal

BTW, he's very cute! I love birds too. But I know parrot-types take a lot of attention because they're very social, not to mention our cat would be very confused. She probably think "Well, it *looks* like a snack, but it seems to big to be snack. What am I supposed to do with it?" (Not to mention they're way expensive, unless you adopt from a rescue.)

Good luck with the new addition when he arrives! African Greys are supposed to be super smart and fun.

During the second Lebanon War my family took in a family from the North with a three-year-old, a one-year-old and an African Gray. That bird was a hoot. Whenever we talked on the phone she would go: "Hello? Hi! Uh huh... uh huh... really! Okay... okay... uh huh..." and when we sounded like we were wrapping it up: "Okay, bye! Goodbye!" She also yelled at the husband to wake up in the wife's voice... :D And a whole number of other amusing things.

She was pretty cranky though. I hope yours is nicer ;)

I'd have to meet him before having name ideas...
