Shhh! Don't tell her!

Current Music: Billy Childish & Holly Golightly - Demolition Girl

Last night, Meret had a lot of trouble getting to sleep. She came and asked me if I could sit on the couch with her and she could tell me of her anxieties. It turns out that she is worried about Chanukkah and her birthday (Dec. 6, the 6th night this year), more specifically about the presents she will get. She feels bad in advance, because she knows that she will get stuff, and she knows that she will get some of what she asked for, and that people worked hard and paid good money for the presents, and all that. But she worries that she won’t appreciate them sufficiently, because she knows that she won’t get what she really wants, which she knows is not affordable. What she really wants is an electric guitar, specifically a Fender Stratocaster. She looked in a music store catalog and realized that many of them are i the $700 range, and so concluded that she can’t have one, and will have to save up for several years. This is pretty accurate when considering a guitar like that...

Except that she doesn’t know that there are less expensive models, made by Squier, Fender’s budget line, and that a Squier Stratocaster, in her desired color of black is exactly what her uncle Adam has procured for her, in conjunction with Stefanie and me. He brought it over when Meret was away for Thanksgiving, and we wrapped it on Friday. She is going to be so surprised and happy!

The hard part was comforting her last night, knowing that she has a week to go on this, and that she is all full of angst. I had to comfort her about this, saying that I understood, and she does still have her acoustic, and that I was sure she would get a great guitar in the future, and to just trust us and know that we are going to do our best, all the while knowing that her guitar is wrapped up and hidden away. I did have qualms about basically lying to her face, but I am sure that all will be forgiven. Meanwhile, I am bursting to tell people. I am not so good about secrets like that.

Now I just have to keep Meret from seeing this for a week.
